Most states use a point based system to track moving and traffic violations. Washington is one of the few states that does not. Washington’s system tracks the violations themselves and treats each one equally, rather than assigning different point values depending on the infraction.

In Washington, a moving violation is any transgression that occurs while the car is in motion. This includes speeding, running a red light, reckless driving, DUI, eluding an officer, etc. Washington makes no specific differentiation between these offenses based on severity. The only difference between speeding and DUI, in terms of severity, is that a DUI will result in an arrest and a violation rather than just a violation.

Six violations in a 12-month period results in your license being suspended or revoked. Violation can also increase your insurance rates steeply. This can add insult to injury in many cases, because in order to be given your license back, you will have to pay fines and fees.
