Getting a speeding ticket or traffic violation is almost a guarantee for any driver. No one is a perfect driver 100% of the time. In California, tickets and violations use a point system to keep track of infractions. Used in many states, the point system assigns a point value to each violation; once you receive enough points in a certain period of time, your driver’s license can be suspended.
Tickets in California are broken down into two categories: infractions and misdemeanors. Infractions are the basic tickets that almost everyone receives in their lifetime: speeding, running red lights, not stopping at a stop sign, etc. Misdemeanors are major offenses like driving without a license, DUI, excessive speeding, etc. Misdemeanors carry higher point values and can result in arrests in cases of DUIs or other serious violations.
Tickets that you plead guilty to will automatically be added to your DMV record and will expire after 36 months (10 years for more serious issues like DUIs). During this time, insurance carriers can raise your premiums or drop you from coverage for major violations.
Major offenses that result in suspended licenses will cause you to have to obtain an SR22. SR22 is a special insurance form proving you have insurance. Most commonly, an SR22 is required after a driver is found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana – even in states where marijuana is legal. They also tend to identify you as a high risk driver. This is where insurance from Eric Johnson comes in.
