There are certain violations such as a DUI or reckless driving which, if convicted, will require you to purchase SR-22 insurance in order to regain driving privileges. An SR-22 is needed even if you don’t currently own a car but still intend to continue driving. If this is the case, you’ll need to purchase a nonowners SR-22 policy, which provides liability insurance coverage.

SR-22 insurance in California simply means that your have purchased at least $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $30,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $5,000 of property damage coverage per accident. These totals are California state minimum requirements for liability coverage. Once these are secured through your insurer, your insurer will then send the SR-22 form to the DMV for you to be able to reinstate your license.
